WANGDUE PHODRANG

WANGDUE PHODRANG

East of Thimpu lies the Wangdi Valley where terraced fields stretch away in shades of green and yellow. At the confluence of the Mo and Tang Rivers, the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong rests on the spur of a hill. The name is said to have been given by the Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who was searching for the best location for a dzong. At the chosen spot the Shabdrung encountered a boy named Wangdi playing beside the river and hence named the dzong "Wangdi's Palace". Built to resemble a sleeping bull, this large dzong is a striking sight and there are excellent views across the valley. Following the riverbank, there's the chance to see picture-book villages and craftspeople working with bamboo and slate
