DARJEELING
DARJEELING
The British used to escape the hot Calcutta summers by staying in Darjeeling for a few months each year. Darjeeling retains its old world colonial charm and its reputation for producing the 'champagne of the east', better known as tea. It is set along a ridge at a height of 2134 meters with marvelous views of the surrounding hills. The town has a large Tibetan population who escaped here with the Dalai Lama in 1959. Traditional Tibetan crafts such as carpet weaving and wood carving are still practiced at the Tibetan Refugee Centre.
