Glutaraldehyde is a pungent colorless liquid and is used to disinfect and sterlize various equipments, surface and water. It is also used for industrial water treatment and as a biocide. A concentration of 0.1 Percent to 1.0 Percent of glutaraldehyde solution may be used for system disinfection. It kills cells quickly by crosslinking their proteins and is usually employed alone or mixed with formaldehyde. 10-50 Percent aqueous solutions of glutaraldehyde are used for the treatment of water in air washers, cooling towers and other water recirculating systems to prevent corrosion and the build up of microbial growth. The glutaraldehyde solution is administered in slugs as shock kill doses, either manually or by use of automatic dosing equipment, to give 50-100 ppm glutaraldehyde in treated water.
