What is Gilsonite? Gilsonite, also known as uintahite or asphaltum, is a bitumen-impregnated rock (asphaltite) mainly found in the Uintah Basin of Utah and Colorado, United States and also Kermanshah of Iran. It is naturally occurring solid hydrocarbon bitumen. The strength, flexibility, extreme light weight and environmental safety of Gilsonite make it a superior additive for cementing and drilling fluids in the oilfield, as well as improving performance and quality in asphalt, his unique mineral is used in more than 160 products, primarily in dark-colored printing inks and paints, oil well drilling muds and cements, asphalt modifiers, foundry sand additives, and a wide variety of chemical products inks, paints, stains, construction materials and foundry castings. Natural Gilsonite is non-hazardous and non-toxic. It is a very pure resinous rock, formed of a complex combination of different kinds of hydrocarbons. This unique natural combination, rich in nitrogen and beta-carotenes and low in sulfur, is what makes Gilsonite so special. Its unique chemical and physical properties make Gilsonite a high-performance, multipurpose additive that is also a cost-effective solution. Gilsonite of our mine is hand-mined in underground shafts using pneumatic jack hammers. We separate Gilsonite by temperature grade, dry and screen it, size it to customer specifications, and submit it to extensive quality control procedures before shipping Gilsonite main Indications: 1. Drilling Fluids -Gilsonite improves drilling efficiencies, wellbore, stability, filter cake development and more. -As an integral component of premium drilling fluid products, Gilsonite actively improves drilling efficiencies while reducing costs and minimizing the HSE impact associated with most drilling fluid additives. Gilsonite is the only drilling fluid additive that provides all of these benefits: Controls fluid loss and seepage Stabilizes shales Prevents lost circulation Strengthens the wellbore to increase wellbore stability Minimizes differential sticking Promotes effective filter cake development Performs in oil- and water-based drilling muds Performs in HP/HT environments Minimizes HSE risks Gilsonite prevents formation damage Gilsonite forms a physical and chemical bond with permeable formations, creating an effective seal to prevent the passage of drilling fluid. By uniquely functioning as both a malleable and solid plugging agent, Gilsonite controls fluid loss and seepage, prevents lost circulation and protects reactive and low-reactive shale surfaces, even at elevated bottom hole temperatures. Proven to strengthen the wellbore HP/HT wells, shales and under pressured zones requires specialized drilling fluids and wellbore-strengthening techniques. Adding Gilsonite to an OBM, SBM or WBM strengthens the well by: Reducing pore pressure transmission and sealing micro-fractures in shale and low-porosity sands Keeping interbedding formations intact Developing effective filter cake Providing a “smear effect” that creates a continuous protective sealant along the wellbore wall The most effective additive to prevent differential sticking Gilsonite minimizes the occurrence of stuck pipe and stuck logging tools by thoroughly sealing permeable formations – even in zones with a highly overbalanced pressure differential – and improving filter cake lubricity. Naturally occurring Gilsonite has significant health advantages over synthetic products. Gilsonite is: Non-toxic (unlike coal or fly ash) Non-carcinogenic Non-mutagenic Gilsonite is safe to handle, use and store. Compared to alternative products, Gilsonite offers comparable or superior performance at a much lower cost. In water-based mud (WBM) applications, Gilsonite’s performance compares favorably with sulfonated asphalts while costing 40% less. 2. Construction A new standard for speed and strength in concrete expansion joints . The unique properties of Gilsonite make it an integral part of the production of asphalt-impregnated fiberboard, known as concrete expansion joints. Asphalt-impregnated fiberboard made with Gilsonite has the industry’s highest asphalt content, so it always meets the ASTM Standard. For concrete expansion joints, we provide a special grade of Gilsonite that is sized so no additional grinding is required for introduction to a slurry tank. That means higher quality, streamlined processes and better project integrity. The unique properties of Gilsonite also enable faster production. Because Gilsonite is naturally hydrophobic, it speeds the release of water as the mat is formed. When the board has been heat pressed, Gilsonite’s adhesive properties bind the fibers together, making a stronger board. 3. Inking and painting Gilsonite. Superior binding and carbon black dispersion make gilsonite the ideal ink additive. The unique natural properties of Gilsonite make it the must-have, high-performance ink additive for top quality newspapers, magazines and other publications. When you read a newspaper or magazine, you touch the benefits of Gilsonite. The majority of the newspapers printed in the U.S., Europe, Japan and other locations throughout the world rely on Gilsonite to make the “no rub” inks their readers demand. The jet black in many heatset printed magazines and high-quality publications simply would not be possible without the excellent carbon black dispersion properties of Gilsonite. Gilsonite delivers economic performance too. It is more cost-effective than hydrocarbon and phenolic resins. For premium performance, you can rely on Gilsonite to be Naturally Better Which require hardness values around 5 penetrations for acceptable paint drying. Paint films composed of bitumen alone are tacky if the penetration is more than 10, and are brittle if less than 4. Paints and Stains: Bond together against the elements with the unique qualities of gilsonite stain and paint additive. For weatherproof paint bonding and fade-resistant stain pigments, Gilsonite is the high-performance, cost-effective choice. Because of the unique properties of Gilsonite, it gives paint an excellent bond to almost any material that needs to be protected from the elements. It is a critical high-performance, low-cost paint additive for anticorrosive paints, underbody paints and pipe coatings. 4. Asphalt and paving Gilsonite Use gilsonite in asphalt binder and recycled asphalt to build roads that last. High-performance road surfaces have long been made possible with the use of Gilsonite. Gilsonite’s superior properties make it the go-to modifier for hot mix pavements and pavement sealers. As an asphalt binder modifier, the unique properties of Gilsonite make a road that is less susceptible to high-temperature and deformation performance issues. When these modified binders are used in recycled asphalt pavements, Gilsonite adds back what time has taken from the old asphalt, making it easier to use more of this recycled material. The Gilsonite-modified asphalt binder will produce a stronger road that can be thinner by nearly 20 percent compared with other pavements information about this As an aggregate modifier, Gilsonite can be added directly at the hot mix plant with no additional equipment. The excellent bonding properties of Gilsonite will produce a high-strength, high-performance pavement that also resists water stripping. 5-Foundry: Foundries around the world have known for decades that when the fire of molten iron meets foundry sand, Gilsonite makes the difference. For your complex, high value iron castings, Gilsonite performs like no other carbon additive. Gilsonite’s naturally superior properties mean high-quality castings with better finish and fewer imperfections. Three times as much gas generated as sea coal for better mold release High lustrous carbon for better finish Reductive atmosphere for less reaction between mold and casting for fewer imperfections 6-Cementing: Gilsonite is effective lost circulations materials that assure zonal isolation and reduces environmental risk. As the challenges presented by today’s wellbore configurations increase, a properly designed cementing process is critical to keeping the wellbore isolated, protected and environmentally sound. For more than 50 years, the industry has depended on Gilsoniteas a lost circulation material and a critical component for primary cementing operations in some of the world’s toughest drilling environments. Adding Gilsonite during cementing operations enhances the characteristics that are critical to effectively cementing the casing, isolating hydrocarbon formations and preventing annular gas flow. With its unique physical and chemical properties, Gilsonite provides a range of important benefits in slurry and set cement that are unmatched by any other single additive.
