This naturally occurring acid is found in a white flake or powdered crystal, in its pure state. In its powdered form, it can be prone to flash ignition but is generally known to be non-hazardous. Sebacic acid along with its homologues such as azelaic acid is extensively used in a number of industrial applications in plasticizers, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, cosmetics, candles, etc. Further, it is also a useful as an intermediate for various products in aromatics, antiseptics, and painting material.
